Now for my story,
I had been borderline diabetic for a couple of years but didn't change my eating habits nor did I exercise aside from taking my daughter to the park and walking my dog.
While in the ER for aches and pains in my stomach which would later turn out to be H. Pylori My doctor discovered my blood sugar was 232, she had me fast and do some labwork, my fasting blood sugar was 176 or 8.3 on a scale which I don't fully understand, she prescribed me a medication glipozide told me to take it for a month and if it didn't help and change my eating habits I would most likely become insulin dependant.
They say fear is the greatest motivator and it was true in my instance, I was determined to never become insulin dependant, after all I was a father, and considered myself a survivor often fantasizing about a Mad Max type of America in the future where only the strong survive, how could I be a survivor if I always had to make sure to have insulin on hand?
So that week I got a gym membership for myself, my daughter and her mother, started lifting weights and light cardio a couple days a week and also changing my eating habits, since I don't really cook (except for some mean spaghetti) I always ate out, going through drive thru's which became the root cause of my diabetes, but with a little research this is what I did.......
Breakfast was Oatmeal from Jamba Juice, don't think that all oatmeals are the same, infact if your eating boxed microwaveable oatmeal there's really no point especially if it's loaded with Sugar. No this was the real deal "steel cut" oatmeal. I started getting it with a little brown sugar and bananna and gradually cut down to plain with a couple packets of splenda. For Lunch nations burger helped me out so much, I would alternate between an omelette with cheese and bacon (no carbs), a lettuce wrapped cheeseburger (no carbs), or a chicken sandwich on a wheat bun (low-mid carb), I must point out that the best thing I could have ate there would be a salmon wrap but I just can't palat salmon for some reason?, if you can that would be your best choice. Now dinner was always tricky cause sometimes I ate at home and sometimes I would eat with my daughter and her mother, if we went out it was easy whatever I order make it just meat and veggies, and if I ate at home I could make myself some scrambled eggs or a hamburger patty with salsa or a chicken breast with a side of broccoli and/or beans.
The next month I did another set of labwork and my doctor was amazed, I had lost 15 pounds, my blood pressure was down and my blood sugar was an entire point down from 8.3 to 7.3.
I knew it was lower as I was testing myself once a week and noticed my blood sugar hovered in the low 100's. That was it she told me to stay the course keep losing weight and watching my carbs and she took me off the meds.
That's the story of how I beat diabetes in a month, I still pretty much eat this way, the only time I don't is if I'm with my daughter and food rescourses are scarce, but I still make it a point not to eat potatoes, white rice, or anything from enriched white flour, to satisfy my sweet tooth I usually visit tutti frutti Frozen Yogurt and get a little bit of Frozen Yogurt and a good amount of fresh strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and sliced almonds.
If I need a chocolate fix I eat a Snickers Marathon Bar or a small handful of Peanut M&M's both of which are low glycemic.
Now I don't miss carbs with my meals a good plate of thin steak, broccoli, and whole pinto beans with cheese, and sourcream and or avacado and home made Salsa...... I'm Lovin' it.
I'd love to hear your story.
